Curated Walk 1

Of Tawaifs, Bankers and Perfumers – Reading Sub-Imperial Lives in Mughal Delhi

Shahjanabad, popularly known as Purani Dilli, is a collage of the many lives that were lived here across centuries. Over three hours, we will walk down the alleys and by-lanes of the city and explore the lives of courtesans, bankers, princesses, merchants, travellers, perfumers and poets, who were close to the limelight but never in it. By knitting together individual histories of disparate characters like Jahanara and Chandar Bhan Brahman, we will attempt to weave a larger fabric of the Mughal elite culture that goes beyond the four walls of the imperial court.

During this curated experience, you will walk through historical havelis, from Begum Samru’s Haveli to Fatehpuri Masjid, and try to resurrect the dead by reading their lingering afterlives inscribed in architecture, motifs, letters, fragrances, sounds, and popular memory.
Stories will leap out of the havelis on Dariba Kalan in Chandni Chowk, from the letters of counsel from a father to his son, from the fragrance of bottled monsoon, from domed Shiva temples, and the aazaan of a Begum’s mosque. Purani Dilli will engulf us as you explore its nooks and crannies. Together, you will give in to its wondrous ways.

A Walk to Rediscover: Upper Chitpur Road, Kolkata

Chitpur has a unique historical ecosphere—a wide stretch of busy bazaars with lesser-known heritage sites and unique shops serving local cuisines. Chitpur also embodies some of the city’s finest narratives—of old temples that can be traced back to the Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan, of modern markets established during the British regime and of Kolkata’s largest mosque. We will walk through areas like Ezra Street, once a well-known settlement of Baghdadi Jews in Kolkata, and Chitpur Road, the oldest road in Kolkata. Discover the city’s finest stories with Amitabha, as we explore the nooks and crannies of Chitpur.

Some interesting places you will cover during the walk are:

  •  Lalbazar Police Headquarters: Built in 1918, this magnificent building acts as the headquarters of the Kolkata Police. It was declared a heritage site by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
  •  The principal mosque of the city built by the Kutchi Memon Jamat, a small community of Sunni Muslims from Kutch.
  •  Salehjee Musafirkhana: Established in 1889 by members of the Sunni Bohra community, this is one of the oldest guesthouses in Chitpur.
  •  The abandoned Parsi fire temple in Tiretta Bazaar.
  •  Gerasim Lebedev’s memorial plaque: Lebedev was a Russian gentleman who established a theatre where Bengali actors and actresses were allowed to perform for the first time.
  •  Several shops selling local food items and traditional perfumeries

The Lanes of Charminar

The Charminar, the definitive cultural icon of an equally incredible city, stands in the middle of hundreds of buildings, shops and intersecting lanes. A centre of attraction in Hyderabad, this monument mesmerises young and old, locals and the guests alike with its unique stories, sounds, smells and tastes. It is a reminder of a bygone era. The locality around the minar is a symbol of artistic splendour, cultural harmony and traditionally rooted living.

We start the experience by grabbing a cup of Irani chai at one of the oldest bakeries in Hyderabad. As we move forward, we will stop by the bangle shops of Laad Bazaar. We will learn about Dakhini (popularly known as Hyderabadi Hindi/Urdu) and pick up a few phrases in the language. Before we end the experience, we shall visit the only dargah in India where the graves inside the tomb are covered in sand.

Join us as we explore the lanes around the Charminar at dawn, discovering the many facets of the ‘Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb’. This site is a perfect representation of the region’s multilingualism as well as its local people, trade and cuisines. In this experience we will not only learn about the history of this iconic monument but also hear the stories of the people who inhabit these lanes.
